This family home blends warmth, comfort, and modern elegance across its expansive spaces. The clients envisioned a home that felt timeless—like it had been built years ago—but refreshed with modern finishes. From a custom kitchen with hidden appliances to cozy dining areas and a playful wine bar, every corner was designed for living and gathering. Emily designed a bright conservatory surrounded by windows, allowing the family to enjoy sweeping views of their beautiful property. As a household full of boys, Emily created a third-floor retreat with a feminine touch—a peaceful escape just for Mom. With a private guest suite, a stylish theater for movie nights, and thoughtfully layered outdoor spaces, the home feels both grand and inviting, perfectly reflecting the family’s personality at every turn.
Kitchen:
The client envisioned a large, open kitchen designed for family gathering. Custom cabinetry and a custom hood by Mullwood create a seamless look, while Sub-Zero appliances are fully integrated behind cabinet fronts. Carrara marble countertops add a timeless touch, and a wine bar just off the kitchen provides a fun, unique feature. Lighting throughout the space is by Visual Comfort.
Informal Dining Room:
Surrounded by windows, this space feels warm and cozy. It features a Currey & Co. light fixture, a custom Canadel table, and Hooker chairs for comfortable everyday dining.
Formal Dining Room:
Anchored by a fireplace, this room was enhanced with ceiling beams to add architectural interest. Furnishings include a Visual Comfort light fixture, Surya rug, custom Bramble cabinet and table, and custom Canadel chairs.
Overall Design Vision:
The goal was to create a home that feels like an older, established residence while incorporating updated, modern finishes. Although the home includes many rooms, the design maintains a cozy, welcoming atmosphere throughout.
Conservatory:
One of the most enjoyable spaces to design, the conservatory is surrounded by windows to fully capture views of the clients’ beautiful property and bring the outdoors in.
Guest / In-Law Suite:
The attached guest suite includes a bedroom, spacious bathroom, family room, and large kitchen. While connected to the main house, it has its own private entrance for comfort and independence.
Bedrooms:
The home features six bedrooms, each with its own private bathroom and walk-in closet.
Third-Floor Loft:
A third-floor retreat was created specifically for the homeowner. In a house full of boys, this space has a more feminine feel—designed as a peaceful escape for mom.
Design Process:
The project began with flooring and cabinetry selections, followed by bathrooms completed in phases. Given the size of the home, decisions were intentionally spaced out to avoid overwhelming the clients. Children’s rooms were designed to reflect each boy’s personality while still flowing with the rest of the home.
Design Challenge:
The primary challenge was balancing the home’s large scale with a sense of warmth. Every decision focused on making the home feel inviting rather than oversized.
Outdoor Living Spaces:
Multiple outdoor areas were designed to feel like natural extensions of the home, with each space offering its own unique purpose and atmosphere.
Theater Room:
A standout space featuring fabric-covered wallpaper, art-deco-inspired carpeting, and a custom bar accented with art deco trim by a skilled trim carpenter.
Basement Lighting:
Lighting in the basement living area and over the bar is by Currey & Co., adding both function and style.
Final Thoughts:
The client entrusted the designer with every detail—from build selections to furniture—and the result is a cohesive, thoughtfully designed home. Hiring a designer for a new build helps streamline decisions, reduce overwhelm, and ensure the final home feels intentional, personalized, and timeless rather than chaotic or trend-driven.
